What it means

A budget is a limit you pick for a category, like Groceries or Going out. A common starting point is the 50/30/20 rule of thumb: about half your pay for needs, a third for wants and a fifth for savings. It's a guide, not a rule, so shape it around your life. You can change a budget whenever you like.

Why it matters

A budget turns "I should spend less" into a number you can actually check.
